Last Week in UIW Athletics: Feb. 22-28

The University of the Incarnate Word Athletics department saw another successful action-packed week that saw track and field competing in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Women's golf, soccer and tennis teams as well as men's soccer were all in action.

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word Athletics department saw another successful action-packed week that saw track and field competing in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Women's golf, soccer and tennis teams as well as men's soccer were all in action.

TRACK & FIELD 

  • The Cardinals opened the first day of the Southland Conference Indoor championships in Birmingham, Alabama. 
  • Alisa Novosad became the first Cardinal on the women's side with a podium finish indoor, as she claimed bronze in the pole vault clearing a height of 3.61 meters. 
  • UIW is set to close out the meet on Monday March 1.

WOMEN'S GOLF 

  • UIW placed fifth at the Islander Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. 
  • In the final round of play, Senior Lauren Mancha posted a 4-over par 76 for the low round scorecard.  
  • The Cardinals will have a week break before being back in action in San Antonio at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational. 
MEN'S SOCCER 
  • The Cardinals fell, 2-1, to WAC newcomer Dixie State on Saturday, Feb. 27. 
  • Freshman Wilmar Aguilar scored his first career goal in the 40th minute. 
  • Sophomore Charles Beck stopped two shots in goal, playing 56 minutes in relief for junior Nils Roth.  

WOMEN'S SOCCER 

  • UIW fell in its first conference road trip against Stephen F. Austin 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. 
  • The Cardinals outshot SFA, 21-7, in the loss. 
  • SFA's lone goal game in the 74th minute off a penalty kick. 
WOMEN'S TENNIS 
  • The Cardinals dropped two road matches to open Southland Conference play. 
  • UIW fell 3-4 to Southeastern Louisiana on Friday. 
  • Brandelyn Fulgenzi (No. 1), Lauren Fulgenzi (No. 3) and Sophia Kermet (No. 4) all won their singles matches, but the Lions swept doubles play for the win. 
  • The Cardinals traveled to Lake Charles, La., on Sunday to take on McNeese which saw a 6-1 Cowgirls' win. 
  • The Fulgenzi sisters combined to put UIW on the board with a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
