Four Student-Athletes Named to the 2021 Collegiate Track & Field All-Academic Team
Wed Jul 28, 2021

SAN ANTONIO – Four student-athletes from the University of the Incarnate Word track and field team earned the 2021 Collegiate Track & Field All-Academic Awards. Their efforts, combined with those of their teammates, resulted in their recognition as a team of academic distinction.

To qualify as a member of the All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must receive at least a 3.25 grade point average and must have qualified and/or participated in at least the first round of the NCAA tournament. The entire team wins an award when it earns a cumulative 3.0 GPA, something the Cardinals have done numerous times.

As a team, the men's track and field squad ranked third in the Southland Conference for academic performance, receiving a cumulative 3.22 GPA. The women's track and field team ranked second-highest in the conference, earning a cumulative 3.46 GPA.

"I'm always excited to see the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association academic awards every summer," said head coach Derek Riedel. "Academics are a big deal for this program. We take great pride in being the absolute best we can be in the classroom.  Despite the challenges of mostly online learning and so much uncertainty for the last 15 months, our men and women stepped up again and got it done in the classroom. Ultimately, our student-athletes are here to excel academically and set themselves up for future career success, so for them to shine at a top academic university shows their ability to think at a very high level. We aim to have the top GPA in the conference, but we can live with finishing in the top three on both sides."

Sullivan Wilke, Matheo Bernat, Kyle Lewis and Rodney Littlejohn won student-athlete individual All-Academic Awards.

Wilke is a junior from Bandera, Texas, pursing a bachelor's degree in rehabilitative sciences and physical therapy.  In the spring of 2021, Wilke received a 3.76 GPA, placing her on the All-Academic Team. At the NCAA Division I Track and Field Meet, Wilke scored a 1.67m while competing in the high jump round.

Bernat is a graduate transfer student from Aix-Marseille University in Marseille, France. As a first year as a graduate student at UIW, Bernat secured a 3.76 GPA while studying sports management. At the NCAA Division I Track and Field Meet, Bernat ran a 14.04 for the men's 110 hurdle regional round.

Lewis competed in the 4x100 meter race at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Meet running a 40.17.  For the spring semester, Lewis obtained a 3.94 GPA while pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Littlejohn was ranked in the top 30 nationally for the decathlon. While at UIW, Littlejohn has been selected for the All-Academic Team each of his four years. For the spring semester, Littlejohn received a 3.85 GPA when pursuing his master's degree in kinesiology.
