SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word track and field head coach Dr. Derek Riedel, announces the addition Forrest Donnell and Felipe Valencia to his coaching staff.
Donnell's will focus on multi-events and hurdles while helping assistant coach Sarea Alexander with the horizontal jumps. Donnell comes from Ball State University where he oversaw all field events.
"I want to thank Coach Riedel, his staff, and the administration for giving me this opportunity." Donnell said. "I'm excited to work with the staff and the student-athletes at the University of the Incarnate Word. There is a ton of talent on the roster, so we'll train hard see where our hard work takes us."

The Denver native completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado in 2017. He then worked as a coaching intern with the professional track and field organization, Altis.

Donnell assisted with the horizontal jumpers while becoming acquainted with several Olympic coaches. Following his time with Altis, Coach Donnell moved to the University of Oklahoma as an assistant horizontal jumps coach. Then, after a year, Donnell moved to Muncie, Ind. to take the field events coordinator position at Ball State University. There he coached the heptathlon MAC champion and the MAC HJ runner-up (1.75m) among other great finishes.

According to Riedel, Donnell is voracious learner and a great teacher.
"We are fortunate to have such a talented coach joining our program," Riedel said. "We did an exhaustive national search the month of June and Forrest quickly rose to the top because of his ability to connect with his student-athletes. He loves to learn and has been mentored by some of the best track and field coaches in the nation. I believe he will be able to tap into his recent experiences to help our multi-event and hurdle athletes continue to build on the tremendous success they have recently had. I believe our student-athletes will enjoy Coach Donnell's analytic approach to track and field and it will be a strong partnership!"
Valencia will focus on throws. He was an assistant coach at UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas, where he assisted with all throwing events for a regionally ranked WAC throws squad.
"I am extremely thankful to be joining the University of Incarnate Word Track and Field Team. I want to thank coach Riedel as I grow and develop as a throws coach. I am so excited to be coaching and mentoring athletes. I want to help build a program where athletes finish as champions in and outside of the throwing ring," says Valencia.

The LaJoya, Texas native competed for five seasons at University of Houston. While he is best known for his shot-put prowess as the 2019 AAC Champion, Valencia was a very well-rounded thrower with strong marks in the weight and hammer events as well.

He received a bachelors and master's degrees from UH and then moved home to begin work at UTRGV and work in the hotel industry. In his two years in Edinburg, Valencia learned quickly how to coach the shot put, hammer and discus.

The past two years under the tutelage of a well-known coach, and among several conference champions and regional qualifiers, will help Valencia coach the UIW throws crew to the next level – according to Riedel.
"I've known of Felipe since he was one of the best high school shot putters in the nation," Riedel said. "I've followed his career over the years and have always been impressed with the intensity and grit he competed with. Everyone always knew Felipe would be one of the toughest competitors to beat on any given day. So, when we started looking for a new throws coach and Felipe contacted me to tell me how much he was interested in leading our throws crew it was a no-brainer. We had mutual interest and Felipe knows how to inspire and push his student-athletes by setting an example of excellence and determination. I believe he will be a great addition to a fantastic group of throwers!"
UIW Athletics is proud to have both coaches on board the UIW track and field program.
