Volleyball Welcomes Five New Faces in 2023 Signing Class

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word women's volleyball team signed five new student-athletes to its 2023-24 roster. The student- athletes are coming from as far as Illinois and as close as our hometown of San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word women's volleyball team signed five new student-athletes to its 2023-24 roster. The student- athletes are coming from as far as Illinois and as close as our hometown of San Antonio.  

Head Coach Samantha Dabbs- Thomas and the women's volleyball staff welcome Sofia Grimm, Hailey Garza, Olivia Abbott, Shea Dupuis, and Victoria Hall to UIW.  

"The class of 2023 is a really fun group," Dabbs- Thomas said." My previous and new staff took a really long time to make sure this was a great match for us from a player's standpoint. This group of people is going to bring a lot of personality and character to the team. I've taken a lot of time to get to know them, and I think they're going to bring a lot to the table and to the UIW Volleyball program."  

Sofia Grimm: 6'2 Middle Blocker, Right Side Hitter 

  • The Houston, Texas native was an all-around player at Cypress Creek High School. There she averaged two kills a set, totaling 193 for the year. Serve wise, Grimm was second on her high school team with 54 aces. Sofia is also known for her defensive tactics as she's tallied 297 digs this season. In addition to her outstanding statistics, Grimm received first team honors from her district and was named to the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Academic All-State second team.  

Hailey Garza: 5'2 Libero, Defensive Specialist 

  • Garza is staying home for college here in San Antonio. The talented libero is coming from Antonian College Preparatory to the Nest. In her senior season at Antonian, Garza led her team to the TAPPS 6A Final Four for the first time since 2017. As the libero, she led the team averaging 3.7 digs per set while also helping on the offensive side with 30 assists. Garza played club at San Antonio Magic Volleyball. 

Olivia Abbott: 5'7 Libero, Defensive Specialist 

  • Another incoming Cardinal is coming to the Nest from Houston, Texas. At Stratford High School, Abbott was a team captain and led her team to the UIL State Regional Quarterfinals this past season. As a senior, Abbott was named the District 17-6A's Defensive Player of the Year as she led her team to an undefeated district season, (14-0). Olivia averaged 4.4 digs per set and acquired a total of 497 this past season, sending her career digs way over 1,300.  

Shea Dupuis: 6'1 Middle Blocker/ Right Side Hitter 

  • Dupuis comes to San Antonio from J.J. Pearce High School out of Richardson, Texas. Playing for Madfrog Volleyball in her club season, Dupuis is familiar with being challenged at the highest level. During her senior season she was not only named the RISD All- City Most Valuable Player but was chosen as Hitter of the Year for District 7-6A. On top of all her athletic awards, Dupuis is getting things done in the classroom. Most recently she was also named to the THSCA Academic All- State team.  

Victoria Hall: 5'8 Setter  

  • Hall is the only recruit outside of the state of Texas, she comes to the Nest from Metamora, Illinois. The setter will be joining the Cardinals from Metamora Township High School (MTHS) where she is the second all-time assist leader with a grand total of 1,578 assists to her name. Her junior and senior season she received first team all-conference accolades, and this season she captured an all- state award. Throughout her four years at MTHS, Hall led her team to three consecutive regional titles games, including one ride to supersectionals her junior year.
